FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FOR WRITERS

I'm interested in your Services For Writers. What payment methods do you accept?

For most services for writers, payment is broken down into three equal installments: on agreement, mid-way, and the balance upon completion, before we send you the edited manuscript. For shorter projects (query services, or critiquing a small group of poems), payment is due in full upon agreement. We accept PayPal, Chase Quick Pay, and check. We offer a 10% discount to writers who get multiple services and to returning clients.

How do I send you my manuscript? Are there formatting guidelines?

After you make initial contact with us through the appropriate form on the For Writers page, we'll send you complete instructions for submitting your manuscript and how to format it. In general, fiction needs to be sent as a double-spaced Word document. Poetry can be spaced however is stylistically appropriate for your work, and also needs to be sent as a Word document.

How fast do you work? What's the typical turn-around time?

The turn-around time depends on the project. The typical turn-around time for short projects (query services, or critiquing a small group of poems) is two weeks. We'll let you know an exact schedule when you contact us. For full manuscripts and other longer projects, turn-around time ranges from 4 - 12 weeks. When you contact us, we'll include a schedule for completion of the project with your Editorial Blueprint, so you'll know exactly what to expect before we begin.

So if I work with you, I'm guaranteed to sign with an agent / land a book deal / sell a million copies / have my book optioned for tv & film / earn a six-figure advance, right?

In the publishing business, there are no guarantees, and anyone who tries to tell you otherwise is lying to you, plain and simple. Here's what you can count on: if we work together, your writing will receive close, personal editorial attention. Whether we're providing a developmental edit to an early draft or proofreading your finished book, our focus will always be on bringing your manuscript into the best possible light to help you meet your writing and publishing goals, whatever they may be. Can we guarantee that this project will land you an agent or sell a million copies? We cannot, and nor could anyone else. What we can promise is to help you level up your writing, polish your materials, and give your manuscript the best possible chance to succeed.

I'm writing a poetry or fiction chapbook, and I see you're also an editor at Black Lawrence Press. Can I hire you to edit it, then submit it to Black Lawrence?

Kit edits the chapbook series at Black Lawrence Press. As such, her Copper Lantern Studio clients should not submit chapbook-length work to BLP through the Black River Chapbook Competition or open reading periods, to avoid any editorial conflicts of interest. Kit's clients may certainly submit to other categories and contests at BLP, for which Kit is not the acquiring editor, and Kit will gladly direct clients she works with at Copper Lantern Studio toward other opportunities for chapbook publication.

FOR BUSINESSES

I'm interested in your Business Services. What payment methods do you accept?

For businesses, payment is due upon completion of the project, no more than 30 days after invoicing. We accept PayPal, Chase Quick Pay, and check. We offer a 10% discount to women- and minority-owned businesses and to small businesses with fewer than 10 employees. If this applies, please inform us upon your initial inquiry.

My business document is a PDF. Can you work with that?

Yes. While we recommend sending us a double-spaced Word document for more intensive content editing projects, we can copyedit and proofread on an unlocked PDF using Adobe editing tools.

How fast do you work? What's the typical turn-around time?

The turn-around time depends on the project. For business services, we can typically edit your documents very quickly, within a few days. Rush fees may apply for services requested on short notice. When you contact us, we'll confirm an exact schedule for completion of the project, so you'll know exactly what to expect before we begin.
